A few thoughts on how the cadence of nature and Feng Shui have always connected for me, both personally and through my work, as we move into a change of seasons. We’re transitioning from the fiery season of summer, a time of fullness, abundance, and yang energy, into Autumn. In Feng Shui, autumn is the season of the metal element, a time for letting go and releasing.
The Five Elements and the Seasons in Feng Shui
Each season is connected to one of the five elements: spring is wood, summer is fire, autumn is metal, and winter is water, with earth being the bridge between seasons, grounding and tending to us during transitions.
Letting Go in the Garden
I can see that transition happening right in my garden. The plants are beginning to let go of their bounty with the slightest tug. I’m gathering our small harvest of tomatoes, cucumbers, and whatever else the garden has generously given us this season and the deer who visited us regularly didn’t eat.
Autumn is welcomed by some and perhaps not so much by others. I have to admit, as much as I love the fiery yang energy of summer, I couldn’t sustain it year round. I find its intensity a little tiring, so I welcome this transition of cooler air, the changing light, and the desire to bring a few cozy elements back into our homes this fall.
Honoring the Seasons at Home in New England
One of the things I love most about living in New England is experiencing the rhythm of four distinct seasons. Feng Shui has always helped me recognize and honor those natural patterns, and it’s something I’ve carried into my work as an interior designer at Balanced Interiors, where we offer Feng Shui integration for homes across Rhode Island. Our homes, too, can reflect and support the seasons we’re moving through.
What Are You Ready to Release This Autumn?
As we move into autumn, I hope you find a little time to tune in to your surroundings. Take a breath. Notice what you are ready to release, maybe it’s something you no longer need, love, or want, and with gratitude, let it go.
